Missouri Rankings Update: April 27th

A new team debuts at No. 1, and several other moving parts throughout our board, broken down in this week’s update.

We’re back with another update to our Missouri high school baseball rankings following another week of the MSHSAA season.

It’s important to note that these rankings do not cover the entire state. Our coverage map from a rankings standpoint, in Missouri, includes mostly the city of St. Louis, extending downward to Jackson, Missouri. That doesn’t mean we’re not covering other areas of the state, but from a consistency standpoint, we will only rank teams that fall inside our coverage area.

It’s a pretty interactive week for our board, with a team jumping up to No. 1 for the first time, and considerable movement throughout. For more details and information on our top-15, continue reading below.

AT THE TOP…

+ There’s a new No. 1 in this week’s update, as SLUH (18-5) takes over the top spot for the first time this season. The Jr. Bills had a highly impressive week, splitting their conference series with ranked rival Vianney (2-1 W, 3-1 L) before sweeping a Saturday double-header against previously top-ranked Jackson (7-4, 6-3). Those two wins added onto an already impressive resume for this SLUH club, prompting a bump up to the top spot in this week’s update.

+ Francis Howell (17-7) stays put at No. 2 after a 3-1 week. The Vikings took both games in their GAC set over Francis Howell North (4-1, 5-3) and split a Saturday set, beating North Point (11-1) after dropping a game to Rock Bridge (7-5).

+ Previously in the top spot, Jackson (17-6) is down two spots to No. 3 after a 1-3 week. As we mentioned above, the Indians dropped both of their games to SLUH, and also lost on Monday to Marion (IL) 8-6. Their only win was a 8-5 victory over Poplar Bluff

+ Vianney (19-5) is on the rise, jumping up one spot, and now sitting at No. 4, their highest ranking of the spring. The Griffins went 2-1 this past week, splitting their conference series with SLUH, and adding a 5-2 win over ranked Marquette on Friday afternoon.

+ Rounding out the top five is Eureka (17-6), who bumps down a spot in the board after a conference split with Rockwood Summit (5-3 W, 4-1 L).

STAYING PUT…

The sixth, seventh, and eighth spot remain unchanged from last week’s update:

+ No. 6 Marquette (16-4): The Mustangs cruised to two wins over Parkway West (16-0, 13-3) and also beat Webster Groves (13-1) before dropping their last game of the week to Vianney (5-2).

+ No. 7 Fort Zumwalt West (16-9-1): Two convincing wins over conference foe Troy Buchanan (10-0, 13-3) was the start of the week for Fort Zumwalt West, but the Jaguars dropped their final game over Kirkwood, a 6-3 defeat at the hands of the Pioneers.

+ No. 8 Rockwood Summit (12-7): Maybe the most challenging schedule to date on this list, the Falcons once again split their conference series, beating Eureka 4-1, but dropping a game to the Wildcats 5-3.

ON THE RISE…

+ Don’t look now, but St. Dominic (18-7) has won nine straight games and is up three spots on our board, now sitting at No. 9. The Crusaders’ pitching staff was absolutely excellent this past week, allowing two runs or less in all five of their games. This past week, St. Dominic beat Parkway West (5-0), Lutheran High (8-1), Liberty (10-1), Fort Zumwalt South (11-2), and Seckman (3-1).

+ Rounding out our top-10, and also on the rise, is Seckman (18-6). The Jaguars had an incredibly impressive week, defeating Oakville (5-4), Festus (3-2), and Kirkwood (10-5) in their first three days. They traveled to Ozzie Smith Park and beat Fort Zumwalt North (9-3) and Jefferson City (10-2) before falling to St. Dominic (3-1) in the tournament’s championship game, which is the main reason why they’re not higher on our board. Regardless, this Seckman club has been one of the hottest in the state for the last three weeks.

+ Francis Howell Central (17-7) and Duchesne (18-4) are each up a spot in this update, now at No. 13 and No. 14, respectively. The Spartans split their GAC set with Liberty (17-6 W, 4-2 L), and won all three of their other games, beating St. Charles West (4-0) and Parkway Central (3-2, 6-1) twice. The Pioneers went 3-1 this past week, defeating Troy Buchanan (3-1), St. Francis Borgia (10-4), and Forsyth (12-2) before dropping their last game of the week to Logan-Rogersville (12-4).

FALLING DOWN…

+ Lafayette (15-8) and Oakville (14-6) are each down a few ticks, now sitting at No. 11 and No. 12. Their drops are more correlated with the rise of teams underneath them, like St. Dominic and Seckman making major jumps. We still like both of these clubs, and they had winning weeks.

+ Festus (14-6) falls down to the 15th and final spot on our board after a 2-2 week. The Tigers split their conference set with Hillsboro (9-2 W, 3-2 L), lost 3-2 Seckman and beat Ste. Genevieve 14-2.

NEXT UP…

+ Lindbergh (10-10): Like we say every week, look past the Flyers record when you’re breaking this team down. They’re a young, talented group that’s played a tough schedule and continues to play quality opposition tough. This week, they split a conference set with Lafayette (3-2 W, 7-5 L) and dropped a 3-0 game to Oakville

+ MICDS (12-2-1): One of the private school powers in St. Louis, the Rams have had a strong season to date, and added three more wins to their resume this past week. They’re a talented roster with impact pieces throughout that’ll be able to help them compete come District play, even with the bump up to Class 5 this spring.

+ Westminster Christian (13-7-1): The Wildcats only loss came at the hands of No. 1 SLUH, a 3-0 defeat to the Jr. Bills. They won four other games this past week, sweeping Priory (12-0, 9-4), beating Parkway West (9-4), and also taking down Union (4-2).

+ Union (14-7): The quartet of arms that the Wildcats have at their disposal will give them a chance to beat anyone on any given day, and bodes especially well for postseason play. Tucker Lemons, Zac Voss, Klay Muser, and Logan Hansel have all thrown 25+ innings this spring and none of them has an ERA above 2.15.

+ Kirkwood (9-9): Another team that doesn’t have the prettiest record, the Pioneers do have several quality wins on their resume throughout the spring. Like Lindbergh, they’re a young, inexperienced group at multiple different key spots on the field, but the talent is there for them to make some noise as the season continues to unfold.

+ North County (17-6): The Raiders have been playing quality ball all spring long and are coming off a 3-1 week, in which they defeated Potosi (3-2), Central (7-0), and Orchard Farm (2-1).
